Backward compatibility seems to be a very thorny subject when it comes to Sony and their playstation3, ever since they remove it from their current SKU they have never come fore to say why they did so or whether it will ever make its way back to future SKU. In fact their latter SKUs which feature limited compatibility like my 80GB also seems to have problems of their own. By removing the Emotion Engine chip which powers the original ps2 from the ps3 hardware, the system have to rely on software emulation to run ps2 games thus there is never any guarantee that every game will work and if they did, that any technical problems might arise.
I have been quite fortunate with my string of ps2 games running on ps3 however i can't help but to notice the Cell processor works extra hard to emulate the EE chip as the cooling fan spins faster than usual. This has led me to believe that while there have been some talks about backward compatibility coming back to ps3, it won't happen without some hardware change inside the system because it sounds to me like the Cell is just straining itself to keep up right now.
